In recent years, there has been a surge of popularity in the striking long Yemenite shofars. They originate in Africa from the powerful spiral horns of the long striped African kudu antelope.
Although historically, the Shofar was blown on many occasions, its use is mostly on Rosh Hashanah in the middle of the Services. This was not always so. In ancient times, the Shofar was blown early morning, reflecting the Jews’ enthusiasm to observe G-d’s commands without delay. Sadly, on one occasion, the enemies of the Jews heard the blast and convinced that it was siren calling for rebellion they rushed into the Synagogue and attacked the Jews. Shofar blowing was forbidden and soldiers were sent to ensure that the edict was obeyed. In response, the Sages ruled that the Shofar should be blown in the middle of the day after the soldiers had left. Later, the edict was cancelled but the practice was not changed
When purchasing this shofar you will receive our informative Shofar Guide with tips on blowing and caring for your shofar.
