In May 1948, Ben Gurion ordered that all the underground resistance movements should unite and form a new, united army called the Israel Defense Forces - in Hebrew "Tzahal". The emblem of the army features a sword wrapped in an olive branch enclosed with a Star of David. The sword symbolizes combat and the olive branch expresses the yearning for peace.
